The second ad I chose was an ad for a book I really like called World War Z. The book is about what happens after zombies come and basically take over the world. What is neat about this ad is definitely less visually interesting. At the same time however this ad is very interactive, combining several different media in fun ways. There is an interactive map, author interviews, fan art contest results, and there is even a "Would you survive?" quiz that is loads of fun. The stark black and white of most of the web page is dramatic in its own way, and I really like it. http://www.randomhouse.com/crown/worldwarz/index2.php
Let me know what you think.
I thought both of these ads were really interesting in their own ways, but of the two, my favorite had to be the Coca-Cola ad. I personally have not played or heard of this game, but since you explained that it is a pretty violent game, I like how this commercial was a parody of it. Of the whole thing, I really liked the music it had, it just made it all the better.I feel like it has more you can work with for your essay.

ReplyDeleteThis is a tough choice. The GTA ad is interesting in its targeting of gamers as audience (I secretly love that a game a little). You could analyze the use of music and graphics and character to build an argument.
But, I also like your choice for the book ad. I actually think it might make a richer topic of analysis for Essay 1 because it's not a video ad. Why do you think they went with a hypertext/webpage rather than a print ad or video? How does the lack of music or moving images on this ad foreground the importance of alphabetic text? Is this message important to an audience being urged to buy a book? Also, what sort of community of readers does the map and gray color scheme appeal to?
It seems there are tons of things to analyze in the second ad as far as how it builds its argument and reaches the audience.
Great job-
