In the World War Z ad there is definite logos. The book ad has multiple features which suggest that this book will be helpful, is intelligently written, and is entertaining. Ethos is strongly present as well, with blurbs from respected experts, as well as an interview with the author that highlights his abilities, thought processes and his character. All of these are portrayed as positive, suggesting that the rhetor is of high character. Finally pathos is also present, in the form of interactive features such as the map, which tries to interest you in the sad story presented. The feature that highlights pathos the most in my opinion is the 'Would You Survive?' quiz which directly tries to involve you, the potential reader, in a sort of test of survival, that makes you wonder if you would survive the zombie outbreak, and makes you consider your own survival skills. This combination of appealing to both curiosity and fear makes this a strong appeal to the emotions.

Logos, Ethos, and Pathos In My Ads
In the GTA Coca Cola ad there is only a little demonstration of logos. There is the implication it is a hot day, and therefore something to drink would be good. There is also visuals which suggest that Coca Cola is an excellent drink. Ethos is where this ad really shines. The ad suggests that Coca Cola will make the world a better place, will make people happy. The main character in the ad is virtuous and good, and the implication is that this is entirely because of Coca Cola. All his good deeds stem from the initial cola giving. Finally, pathos is strongly present in this ad as well. The song and dance, together with the charitable deeds appeal to our emotions, suggesting that if we drink Coca Cola we will be happy, just like the people in the ad who interacted with the main character. The good deeds also talk to our emotions, making us feel good. The reversal of what appears to be a bad guy into a helpful hero also pulls on the heartstrings.

Free,
ReplyDeleteI feel like you have a lot of neat ideas and go into a lot of depth about both commercials. I think that the ad that you should choose in the end is the Coca Cola one. It has a ll the main parts that you need in an ad and you seem to already have nciue arguments about the ad itself already, I think you could write a great paper about this.

Both ads are really good and interesting ads and the way you talk about both would make a great paper to talk about. Although I am really liking the coca-cola ad as it brings out a good point you made, dont judge a book by its cover, and also brings out other strong points for a great paper.
ReplyDeleteGreat analysis of use of appeals, Freeman. I think the Coca-Cola ad is especially strong in pathos - making folks happy with Coke is sort of a stretch but I buy it when I watch this ad.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see where your essay takes you-
