I have to admit that I am a bit of a technology-hater, and use internet resources only when absolutely necessary apart from a few specific things: my classes, research for personal interests, and... well, I think that is it. I do belong to both my class discussion boards and My Space. However I have not checked My Space in a long time. I also belong to Fire House Forums. Apart from work related stuff I do not go there very often. I guess I really prefer more "normal" modes of communication and social networking. I use the internet as a tool, like the article indicated my generation often does, and not as a third space for social interaction as the younger generation (most of the people reading this post) does.
My tech interest for this paper seems to be leaning towards Twitter. I think the ability to send and receive messages wherever you are is both amazingly wonderful and at the same time a hideous burden on others. The disparity between the two views is going to make for a better paper I think. I know my wife gets very tired of constantly being tweeted, yet at times it has allowed her to be on top of the news before anyone else (ie. CDC updates on swine flu... she is also an EMT like me).
I really like the approach you are taking. Writing about how these technological advances are so great and convinient, yet at the same time can be such a nuciance. Good way to go!
ReplyDeleteI think you have a good argument to go about in your paper, talking about how it can be a great thing, but also annoying. These are both great topics.
ReplyDeleteThe Twitter focus sounds great. The firehouse forums might also be really interesting groups to look at.
